Visible Light Transmission (VLT) tells you how dark the film appears. A film with 70 percent VLT lets through 70 percent of visible light, which is fairly clear. A film with 15 percent VLT is quite dark.
Here is the key insight that catches most homeowners off guard: darkness does not equal heat rejection. A cheap dyed film might be very dark (low VLT) but reject minimal infrared. Meanwhile, a quality ceramic film can be nearly clear while rejecting the majority of heat-causing infrared energy.
This is exactly why people install dark dyed film, expect a dramatic comfort improvement, and end up disappointed two summers later when their west-facing rooms are still hot. The film looked the part. It did not perform the job.
IR Rejection Ranges by Film Type

Dyed Films: 20 to 35 Percent IR Rejection
Basic dyed films rely on absorbing light rather than reflecting infrared energy. They darken windows but provide minimal heat rejection. The dye also degrades over time in our Gulf-coast humidity, turning purple and losing what little effectiveness it had. Not recommended for permanent New Orleans residences.
Metalized Films: 40 to 55 Percent IR Rejection
